The New Patient First Visit
Our goal at Big Grins is to TEACH both child and parent about oral health. We do that by packaging state of the art dental care into a very unique and fun learning environment designed to put kids at ease. At your first visit to the office, we let natural curiosity lead your child to meet the Dental Assistant who will take care of them for their entire appointment.
- A Dental Assistant will befriend and lead your child into the cleaning area, where other children are in a classroom like setting. During this time, your child is gently introduced to the dental cleaning process, first with a toothbrush, then to X-rays (if appropriate).
- During this time, parents learn about pediatric dentistry and the office workings with the New Patient Coordinator, in a one-on-one meeting and short PowerPoint presentation.
- Dr. Greg checks on your child and calculates their attention span and comfort level. He’ll then finish the cleaning, interpret x rays and perform an extensive head, neck and oral exam. If your child is comfortable, Dr. Greg does this before talking to you. Otherwise, you and Dr. Greg finish this step with your child together.
- Dr. Greg then sits down to discuss with you all findings, recommended treatments and ways to follow up at home. Your child’s health history, as well as, any questions you have are also discussed. Your child is congratulated for being such a good patient and is offered a small toy as a token of our friendship.
- Lastly, you’re introduced to our Check Out Person, and it’s playtime again! Your entire visit should last about 45 minutes from front door to check out. Please feel free to come early and let your child explore and play in our wonderful play areas.
A few parting tips: We want you to enjoy your first visit to Big Grins as much as your child. Fill out our paperwork ahead of time, and email or fax it back, or bring it with you ready to hand over. Allow yourself plenty of time to enjoy a gourmet coffee in our cafe’, or explore our exciting play areas with your child. Dr. Greg hates paperwork as much as you do, but the information you supply us will help you receive our best, confidential and caring customer service!
Also, please plan to arrive at least ten minutes early for your appointment. You may not be used to a practice running on time, but we plan to pleasantly surprise you! If you and your child have a chance to settle in and relax before we call you both back, it sets a precedent and your child will get off on the right foot! Thanks for your help!
